Brick Sizes and Types in South Africa

South African construction relies on a small set of standardised brick dimensions, though variations exist between manufacturers and applications. This guide covers the brick types you're likely to encounter when planning a project, so you can pick the right one before running the brick calculator.

Standard brick: the national default

Dimensions: 220mm (length) x 110mm (width) x 75mm (height). The standard brick is South Africa's most widely used unit, specified under SANS 227-1, and covers residential homes (internal and external walls), commercial buildings, load-bearing structures, and boundary walls and garden features. The 220 x 110mm footprint gives a 2:1 aspect ratio, which produces a stable, tightly interlocking bond pattern, and these dimensions have stayed consistent for decades, so newer work matches older construction.

Maxi brick: faster construction

Dimensions: 240mm (length) x 115mm (width) x 90mm (height). Maxi bricks are roughly 20-25% larger than standard bricks and increasingly used on large-scale and commercial projects. Fewer bricks are needed to cover the same area, which reduces laying time (commonly cited as 10-15% faster than standard brick), and the larger face improves uniformity on a facade with fewer horizontal mortar joints.

The trade-off: maxi bricks typically cost more per unit, fewer fit on a pallet (roughly 400-450 versus 500 for standard), some decorative bond patterns are harder to achieve at the larger size, and speciality maxi sizes can have a longer supplier lead time than standard stock.

Bricks per m2: approximately 42-45 for a single-skin wall (10mm mortar joint), 84-90 for double-skin, or roughly 4-5 bricks per linear metre at 1m wall height.

Concrete blocks: a different material entirely

Concrete blocks (a common standard size is 400mm x 200mm x 200mm) are sometimes confused with bricks, but they're a different material (cement and aggregate rather than fired clay), a different size, generally higher compressive strength, and usually plastered or rendered rather than left as a visible finish. Facing bricks: the visible finish

Facing bricks are clay bricks with a decorative surface finish, widely used across South African architecture, and they keep the standard 220 x 110 x 75mm dimensions so the same bricks-per-m2 figures apply. Common finishes include smooth red/brown (a traditional clay colour with minimal texture), rough or rustic (an irregular surface for character), speckled (multicoloured with sand particles, popular in modern architecture), whitewashed or cream (lighter tones for a contemporary look), and deep burgundy or charcoal (premium accent-wall colours). Engineering bricks: built for strength

Engineering bricks are manufactured to a higher structural standard: significantly higher compressive strength and lower water absorption than a standard clay brick, which makes them more resistant to chemical attack. They're typically used for coastal properties (salt-air corrosion), industrial buildings (chemical exposure), below-ground structures (damp-proofing, basements), and critical structural elements such as load-bearing cores and lintels. They cost noticeably more than standard brick and are usually supplied to order rather than kept as standard stock.

Interlocking pavers: a different product entirely

Interlocking concrete pavers (used for driveways, patios and walkways) are sometimes grouped with 'bricks' in casual conversation, but they're a different product with a different calculation method. Pavers are quoted and calculated by area coverage per m2 (a specific paver shape and size covers a fixed area per unit, with a small allowance for cutting at edges), not by the wall-area formula this site's calculator uses.
