Brick Wall Cost Calculator

Knowing how many bricks a wall needs is only half the budget question. This calculator takes a brick count (from the brick calculator or the room brick calculator) and a price you've already been quoted, then works out the material cost, an optional delivery cost, and a cost per square metre if you also know the wall area. Brick prices vary too much by supplier, brick type and province for this site to guess a figure for you, so every price here comes from your own quote.

Don't know this number yet? Use the brick calculator or room brick calculator first.

Add this to also see a cost per square metre.

Total cost – Enter the number of bricks and a price per brick.

How to use the cost calculator

Three fields, two of them required:

  1. Enter the number of bricks needed. If you don't have this yet, calculate it with the brick calculator or the room brick calculator first (both linked at the top of this page), then come back with the total.
  2. Enter the price per brick from your supplier's quote, in Rand. Suppliers usually quote per pallet or per 1,000 bricks, so divide that figure by the pallet or thousand count first.
  3. Add a delivery cost if your quote includes one, and the wall area your brick count covers if you want a cost per square metre as well. Both are optional.

Why this tool doesn't include a price database

A brick's price depends on the type (standard clay brick, maxi brick, facing brick, engineering brick), the manufacturer, the province, and how the market is moving at the time you're quoting. A number published on this page today could be well out of date within months, and a wrong number is worse than no number, since it can lead to a budget built on a figure no supplier is actually offering. Getting your own quote and entering it here keeps the total accurate to your actual project, not to a generic average.

Comparing quotes from more than one supplier

Retail chains, local brick suppliers and quarries all price differently, and the difference is often larger on a bulk order than on a small one. A few things worth checking before entering a final price into this calculator:

Worked example

2,996 bricks needed (the brick calculator worked example, a 10m double-skin wall), a supplier quote of R3.50 per standard brick, and a R850 delivery charge:

Try these figures in the calculator above, or replace them with your own quote and wall size.

Frequently asked questions

Does the total include mortar, sand or labour?
No. This tool calculates brick material cost (plus delivery, if entered) only. Mortar, sand and labour are separate line items your supplier or builder would quote independently, and they aren't part of this calculation.
Where do I get a price per brick if my quote is per pallet?
Divide the pallet price by the number of bricks on that pallet, which your supplier's quote should state (roughly 500 for standard brick, 250 for cement maxi brick, though it's worth confirming the exact count with them since it can vary slightly by supplier).
Why isn't there a default South African brick price shown anywhere on this page?
Brick prices move with the market and vary significantly by type, manufacturer and province. A single default figure would go stale quickly and could mislead a budget, so this tool always uses the price you enter from your own quote instead.
Can I use this for a cost estimate before I have any quotes?
You can, but treat the result as a rough placeholder only. Contact at least one local supplier for an actual price per brick before finalising a budget, since a guessed price can be off by a meaningful margin either way.
Does the total include VAT?
That depends entirely on how your supplier quoted the price. Some quotes are VAT-inclusive and some are VAT-exclusive, so check which one you were given before entering it here. If your quoted price is exclusive of VAT and you want a VAT-inclusive total, add 15% to the result this calculator gives you (South Africa's standard VAT rate at the time of writing, though it's worth confirming the current rate with your supplier or SARS, since VAT rates can change).
